Dan Karleen
DK: What are your main roles and responsibilities at Drexel University?
I am the E-Learning Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS). In this capacity I assist faculty with recommendations and implementation of technology to increase the effectiveness of their classes. Being a faculty myself in the Department of Chemistry and teaching classes fully and partially online, I think I bring a useful perspective.
DK: You've been very active in promoting blogs, wikis, and podcasts at Drexel. How is it going?
It is going very well I think. We have been podcasting since February of 2005 and have evolved a template that can be fairly easily replicated by most teachers. In this system every lecture is both screencast and podcast, with a blog serving as the vehicle of dissemination. The addition of a wiki to further organize class information provides a convenient way to make the information available as open courseware, if that is the objective of the teacher.
DK: As the Section Chair of the Teaching Track in HigherEd BlogCon, what kinds of presentation proposals are you hoping to receive? Are there any specific kinds of applications or ideas you would like to explore?
I am hoping to be able to provide lots of actionable information in this track, preferably using open source or free resources. Any application of technology in education is welcome.
