Title: Go where the patrons are: Outreach in the age of Library 2.0
Abstract:
Reference and Instruction librarians are in the forefront of outreach and interactivity with the patron, and are the prime candidates for embracing the interactivity that Web 2.0 brings to the virtual presence of the library. Tools such as blogs and RSS open up the outreach possibilities to an academic campus in ways that haven’t been possible, and reference librarians are a natural intermediary between the technology and the patron.
Specifically, here at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, our Reference and Instruction department is working on a “New Book” system revolving around the very popular Open Source blog software Wordpress 2.0. When combined with a series of plugins that increase the capabilities of Wordpress to make it far more than just a blog, you have a flexible Content Management System that is capable of many things. We use this system in order to communicate to the different academic departments when we have new materials of interest to them and to gather RSS feeds that are of interest to the library faculty. The benefit of utilizing a blog in this manner is that it gives control of how and what is presented, and puts that control in the hands of the librarians that should be most capable of presenting it in an informationally sound way.
This presentation will walk through the installation, configuration, and customization of Wordpress 2.0, with a discussion of the benefits of the Structured Blogging plugin, an RSS aggregation plugin, how to use PHP inside of Wordpress Pages to create dynamic content. All of this will be framed in the context of outreach to patrons and interaction with academic departments, with discussion of what we’ve found useful, potential for integration with the larger University IT system, and a look at future uses of the technology.
